CITY TOUR - ALTOS DEL CHAVÓN // HIGUEY
Altos de Chavon has become one of the best known Dominican Republic tourist attractions for visitors to the south-east of the country. Set in an impressive hillside location above the resort of La Romana is one of those 'not-to-be-missed' tourist attraction yet it is a self-evident 'oddity' - as it is actually, hardly a typical Dominican venue. For on this site stands a completely re-imagined 16th century southern European village -- complete in all the detail, and replete with the character and charm that such a place should have -- and appearing just as if it has been magically transported by some wizard's whimsy to this location from medieval Spain itself.
From there you can appreciate Chavón river, a natural scenario which has been used for films like "Apocalipsis Now" and "Rambo". Altos de Chavón counts with a church, restaurants, art galleries, a taino museum, shopping centers, discos, artists’ studios, a school of design and one amphitheater. The Altos de Chavón School of Design is associated to Parsons School of Design from New York. The San Estanislao church is placed in the center of the village, it’s named on behalf of H.H. John Paul II, since Saint Stanislaw is patron saint of Poland; country of origin of the late Supreme pontiff.
The Mediterranean village is a source of inspiration for those artists who live, study or where there. In our trip back, we will pass by Higuey, capital of Altagracia province, and we will visit the Dominican Republic patron saint church La Virgen de la Altagracia. Built by Dr. JOAQUIN BALAGUER during the 1974 – 1978 constitutional period. It’s the most important religious monument in Dominican Republic and a center of attention for the rest the peoples of the Americas. It is the Dominicans’ most venerated and is known as the home of the patron saint of the Dominican people, La Virgen de la Altagracia.
The current Basilica was opened on January 21 1971. The architects in charge were the French A. Dunover de Segonazc and Pierre Dupré. It was built to replace the old sanctuary built by 1512. This monument is named after la Virgen de la Altagracia, patron saint of the Dominican people. In it there is a painting of the Virgen 33.5 centimeters wide by 45 centimeters high. This painting belongs to the Spanish school and is believed to have been made from the end of the XV century or the beginning of the XVI.
